Rest in Peace Kobe

My heart breaks at the loss of Kobe Bryant and his beloved daughter. History will regard him as one of the greatest in so many ways. He leaves a legacy of love, genius, talent, heart, kindness, inspiration. He dreamed big dreams and he made them happen, and he is gone way too soon. He is proof that one man CAN make a difference far beyond the corners of our own little worlds. As I said in my earlier post today about losing Pepper, death is a wake up call about what is important in life. When all is said and done, the only thing that matters is that you love and are loved. That will be your legacy. Let us all use our gifts and live our lives the way Kobe did, to pay it forward in his honor. Leave a legacy of love. Read More

Remember our Veterans

November 11, 2019 Barbara Niven Blog tags: blog 0 comments
Please take a moment today to remember our Veterans, and to be grateful for their service. They have put their lives on the line and sacrificed so much for each one of us. We owe them so much more than we have given them in return. Even a simple “thank you” to show them your respect and gratitude would mean so much, and could literally be life-changing to someone who is still struggling with PTSD after their time of service. We will never know what they have seen or gone through, but we can at the very least show them how much we care, and let them know that they are not alone. Veterans Day is not a political day, so please honor what they fought for by putting your differences aside. Honor them by being kind and remembering what America stands for… truth, safety, freedom, equality, liberty and justice… for each and every one of us. 🙏 🇺🇸 ❤️ Read More

The Last Word

October 23, 2019 Barbara Niven Blog tags: blog 0 comments
I’m doing a play! It’s called “The Last Word”, and it’s by the gifted Writer/Producer Jan Miller Corran. This will be the play’s world premiere at the Garry Marshall Theatre in Burbank, CA, running from Nov 7 – 17. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be in this production… and how much I needed to do this play. As an actor, I’ve learned that projects come into my life for a reason, whether it’s for me to resolve a current issue in life, or to understand what has happened in the past. So when I read a script and start to feel goosebumps about a character or a project, I have learned to take the leap and say yes. That’s what happened when Jan Miller Corran sent this new play to me. Reading it through the first time, I literally got goosebumps. I was riveted. I cried, I laughed, and I was just was so moved by the profound truths of the material and the characters. I already knew this woman “Jillian,” and knew that I wanted to be the one to bring her to life. So… I said yes. I have been having a blast. I love doing […] Read More

Never forget.

September 11, 2019 Barbara Niven Blog tags: blog 0 comments
September 11, 2001. We will never forget the horrors of that day when America was attacked. But let us also never forget to remember and be inspired by the Heroes, both 2-legged and 4-legged, who rushed in to help rescue and save others, at great personal cost to themselves. We owe them so much, and now must fully support them and their families as they continue to deal with the emotional and physical ramifications of their choices. “Thank you” is not enough. They need us to be their heroes now, in money and health care from a grateful nation. Most of us will have very few times in our lives when we face an epic “Hero Test”. But it will happen, in both big and small ways. The big events… hurricanes, wars, emergencies… are sometimes easier to identify and rise up for. But the little daily ones are often more important. The decision to stand up for someone who is being bullied or discriminated against. To speak up for an unpopular cause because in your heart you know it is the right thing to do. To not turn away when you see someone in need, but instead choose to take a […] Read More

Hurricane Dorian

Please join me in the following prayer, and share so that we can create a global prayer chain. Prayers create miracles, and we need them right now. Thank you and God bless. 🙏❤️ Please God, bless the people and animals of the Bahamas who have faced unbelievable devastation from #HurricaneDorian. Help us help them find rescue and refuge, and rebuild their lives as soon as possible. Please also watch over all those who are in the path of this unpredictable monster storm as it approaches the U.S. We ask that you help them prepare and keep them safe and protected. And please God… let us heed your signs and start taking better care of this precious Mother Earth that you have created and entrusted to us. We have let you, and her, down. Please forgive us and guide us now to come together across this planet to stop climate change before it is too late. Amen. 🙏❤️ Read More

Thank you, Dad.

D-Day. I’ve been imagining what it must have been like on this day 75 years ago. What they saw, what they felt and how much these young soldiers had to grow up within a span of a few minutes as they came onto that beach, jumping from the boats, racing to find any kind of shelter as bullets whizzed by their heads and bodies, watching their friends die next to them. I don’t know how they did it. I don’t know if I could do it. We owe them so much. The images we have been seeing in photos, newsreels and interviews show war to be so heart-breakingly real. Yet most of us do not connect the dots into how precious and fragile our freedom truly is, or what people sacrificed so that we could be free. My Dad was in the Merchant Marines in WWII and he was just a kid, like so many of the D-Day veterans who are sharing their stories now. I can’t imagine what they saw and lived through. Yet the words they keep repeating is that they did their duty because it had to be done. They are true heroes. I have been weeping as […] Read More
Happy #PrideMonth! I celebrate all my LGBTQ+ friends and those who just need someone to support them in their quest to be who they are. It takes so much courage to “come out” and declare yourself, to stand up and say with pride “This is me.” I can’t even imagine what strength it costs to take that risk, knowing you have everything to gain but also everything to lose. Too many lose their families, their friends, their jobs, their very lives. In this day and age we should not still be reading stories of people who are being bullied and judged for choosing who they love or who they decide to be in their own bodies. How can it be that homeless youth statistics are still growing because their families banish them for being gay or transgender and they have nowhere to go? Where is the love in that? I am a Christian and I always ask myself “what would Jesus do?” Jesus ALWAYS chose love, not hate, in every story I ever read in the bible. He is my teacher. Right this very minute someone may be contemplating suicide – someone you may even know – because they feel despair […] Read More

Golden Buzzer

Just wow. Talk about overcoming adversity and creating miracles! If this young man can achieve this, what are you capable of? What have you been putting off for “some day”? What are you waiting for? Every one of us is here for a purpose, and everything is possible… but the clock is ticking. The one thing you can never get more of is time. So don’t waste it now and risk having regrets at the end of your life. If you’ve been holding yourself back, change it. Make this the first day of the new You. Decide to take a leap of faith… in yourself. Start creating the future you’ve dreamed of. Set your vision, connect to your passion, and go for it! Surround yourself with positive people and other Dreamers who support you, and support them right back. Work harder than anyone else. Be kind and be grateful. Keep your eye on the prize, find joy in the journey, and celebrate all the little wins along the way. And, most importantly, don’t give up five minutes before your miracle. (Or Golden Buzzer, as the case may be.) ❤️ Read More
It’s Be Kind To Animals week! So please give your pets a hug and an extra treat from me. And if you’re looking for a new family member, please adopt – don’t shop from a breeder. Your local shelters and rescue groups have perfect, wonderful animals just waiting for you to become their forever family. You can find perfect, pure bred dogs, cats and other animals in any size or kind or mix. Plus rescued animals are so grateful to you, because they remember what it was like when they were scared and alone in a cage – with the clock ticking towards euthenasia – until someone finally stepped up to save them. Imagine all those little faces looking out from their bleak rows of cages, hoping against hope that today will be their lucky day… that someone will stop in front of their cage and say “that’s the one I want.” When you adopt a dog or a cat or other animal you will be gaining so much more than what you will be giving them. Yes, you will be rescuing them… but they will rescue you right back. PS – I send much love from me and my family […] Read More

A day of Hope

April 21, 2019 Barbara Niven Blog tags: blog 0 comments
Today is a day of Hope, when we are reminded to believe in Miracles. This hope is not just for those of us who celebrate Easter. It’s for all of us, no matter how we define our faith or belief systems, or what color our skin is, or who we love, how much money we do or don’t have, or where we come from on this planet. This is a day to remember that we are all more alike than different. That when one of us hurts, we hurt collectively. And also that when human beings come together without judgment, in the truest manifestation of what every religion is founded on… LOVE… we can create miracles. Miracles that will raise us all up together. No matter what is going on in your life right now, or how much stress you feel in these crazy, upside-down times we are living in, stay true to your core beliefs and your ethics. Don’t waiver from what you know is right. Be kind. Say thank you for your blessings. Give without thought of receiving anything in return. Smile at someone you don’t know. Do something nice, just “because”. Pay Hope forward. When all is […] Read More
