What a flashpoint in history we are living in. An unprecedented pandemic, murder right before our eyes, rioting in the streets, and a country in division and chaos.
I unite with the protesters who say enough is enough and demand much needed change. I am frustrated that peaceful protests and “taking knees” have not created that change, only more division. Protests, righteous rage and action are needed, and these rights are protected by the Constitution. But watching the violence taking place by some, including for political gain, is just so awful and overwhelming.
Looting and destruction of communities and local businesses is wrong. It does not honor the memory of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Eric Gardner, and all who have died before in the same horrible way. They are each someone’s precious child, and they died on our watch. Please let us honor them by finding a way to change the system and unite us in peace.
I have so many emotions as I watch the TV screen. It feels like a war zone in our cities, our own neighborhoods. These are desperate times, and I hope a tipping point to somehow bring us together as a nation that finally figures out how to live in true equality.
I feel nothing will ever be the same again, but I think that’s a good thing. If we continued to bury our heads in the sand, atrocities would keep taking place in broad daylight. Thank God for video, it is undeniable proof, things that can never be unseen. If we don’t expose the blackness, it can’t be scoured out and replaced with light.
I will never forget watching that video of George Floyd’s murder. It was a modern day lynching and we were witnesses. All mothers who heard him call out for his mama know what they would do if they heard their own baby call out for her the same way. He became our own child in that moment.
We as human beings must say “no more”. We must come together to protect all the other sons and daughters, to change that same “old white man” mindset that has led this country for centuries. If we don’t demand change and keep feet to the fire until it happens, we are complicit in these crimes. The blood that is spilled is on our own hands and souls.
The justice system in America is flawed to say the least. But most people in law enforcement are good, in it for the right reasons. In fact, I send a huge thank you to the heroic officers and responders who are putting themselves in danger as they do their best to put out fires and protect people. They are figuratively and literally “taking knees” in support of peace and change in their communities. But there are bad people in every profession, and the bad cops who terrorize and murder need to be held accountable, with the same standards as everyone else. We need swift, equal justice and an absolute culture change. Now.
Black lives matter. All lives matter. No parents of black or brown children should ever have to live in fear wondering if their kids will come home at night. It’s not something white parents have to worry about. With my white privilege (that I was not even aware I had), that worry would never have occurred to me. I taught my child to instinctively go to police for help and safety. But for too many others police are danger zones that can get you killed. I can’t even imagine. I am ashamed I did not know this. But I am awake now.
So many crises are all converging at the same time. Death, economic suffering, violence. Each one is scary, soul crushing, flattening, overwhelming. But we can’t let ourselves get too low or depressed. Feeling helpless and paralyzed will do no good. We must stay empowered to speak up and take action. To stand beside, and uplift, those who have no voice. Mother to mother, father to father, child to child of all colors, religions, sexual orientations, and political parties holding hands as one, to stop violence and unite together for peace.
Wherever you are in the world, I’m sending you positive energy, intention, love, courage and strength to stand up and become part of the solution. Please join me and find ways to create change around you. Vow to not be silent when you see an injustice. Vow to stand up against racism. Vow to make a difference. Vow to spread light. Vow to make LOVE louder than hate! And most of all, vow to Vote and make your voice heard.
We can and will get through this if we stand together. Not to go back to the way things were, but to create a future of equal hope, opportunity and justice… for each and every one of us and our children. 🙏❤️ 🇺🇸
