On this Memorial Day I thank and honor our fallen soldiers and all the military men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country. But I am not equipped – nor do I have the right – to speak about the incredible depth and meaning of what this day should signify to all of us. So I am sharing a post written here by my dear friend and fellow actor Dan Lauria. Dan was a Marine Captain in Vietnam (he’s the one kneeling in the photo). He knows the full price of patriotism because he lived it as he and his friends fought for the concepts of freedom and liberty and equality for all.
Dan is one of the greatest heroes I know, next to my father who was also a Veteran (and of course he loved Dan.) Dan continues to teach me what love for country and patriotism really means. He also is an avid reader and student of history, and is able to give well thought-out BIPARTISAN alarm calls to all of us to stay vigilant to protect the concepts this country was founded on. Below is just one of his essays.
On this Memorial Day remember that our own forefathers not many generations ago once came to this country because of what it stands for…. hope, opportunity, a new beginning for everyone no matter what race, religion, color, sexual orientation or differences they may have had. Diversity has always brought so much beauty and greatness to us! We are so much better together than separate and divided.
It’s time for each of us to become heroes, take responsibility and step up for what is right. If we see a wrong happening, especially when it is against those who have less voice or power, we must stand up and speak out for basic human decency and democracy. Because there but for the grace of God go any of us.
Thank you Dan for your wisdom. On this Memorial Day I dream that we all become vigilant soldiers for love and peace here and abroad, so that your sacrifice and the loss of your friends who died in battle were not in vain. I pray we listen to heroes like you before it’s too late, so that we get our moral compass back on track and make you proud again.
God bless you and God bless America. All of us.
