Is there someone you know who may be feeling alone and forgotten? A neighbor. Family member. Homeless person down on their luck. Single parent struggling to make ends meet. Or an old woman like this who lives alone. Thoreau wrote that we are all “living quiet lives of desperation.” How utterly sad and heartbreaking that so many people struggle in silence under the radar.
What would happen if we took the time to acknowledge them instead of look away? To show them they are not invisible, that they matter. What would it cost us to look them in the eye, smile and say hello? Or instead of rushing to judge, what if we rushed to offer help, and thereby offer hope. What would it cost us to spend five minutes in conversation, buy them a hot meal, make a phone call to check in, or maybe just reach out and offer human touch. How much more does it cost us not to? How much of our souls do we lose when we choose not to give love whenever and wherever we can?
Today, let’s vow to make the whole world better by changing just one person’s world with a kindly act. And then please come back and write about it here and tell us what happened. I think we can create a day full of miracles for them… and for ourselves. Whose life will you change today? #BeAHero#BeTheChange
PS – My friend and human rights advocate Jean Williamson reminded me that this is National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week. But as she says, what about the other 51 weeks of the year? Remember that there but for the grace of God go any of us. Let’s create change – especially as we near Thanksgiving – so that nobody goes without food or shelter.
