National Dog Day!

It’s National Dog Day! I am honored to be a National Ambassador for American Humane?. One of my missions is to encourage adoption of Senior pets. In honor of that, I want to tell you a little more about my newest rescue, Meggy Rose. I adopted her in December after Lola Rose passed, from the same rescue I had gotten Lola from years ago, Kinder4Rescue. (Thank you Auntie Laurel for rescuing them both!)

Meggy is a Senior, about 9 years old. She was way behind on health maintenance so I have since given her two dental cleanings and now she only has 3 teeth left. Because of that her little tongue hangs out of her mouth. Makes her even cuter!!. She’s also a little chunky (she looks like a rolly polly hamster) so she and I are both on a healthy diet and exercise program.

Meggy has become my shadow and my heart. She follows me everywhere and never takes her eyes off me. (I even have dog beds in my bathroom – don’t ask.) I think rescued animals have a fear that humans are going to abandon them again, so she always keeps me in sight. I can’t imagine what heartache she might have been through that causes her to feel that way. She also must have been dropped before because she panics when I pick her up, worrying about her feet being off the ground. But she’s getting better about it and is learning to trust. And boy does she give Love to all living things! She’s so kind to my little Lucy who is 16-1/2, deaf and almost completely blind now, and they like to sleep together in one dog bed. And… my 15 yr old Pepper has fallen in love for the first time! This grumpy little old man has a new lease on life since Meggy arrived, and he lets her eat from his bowl with him and tries to get her to chase him. (When she loses a little more weight she’ll move a little faster!)

I vow to spend the rest of Meggy’s life showing her how to trust humans with the same kind of heart that she shows to every living thing, and I promise her that she will be with us in our Niven family forever.

If you’re considering getting a new pet, please #AdoptDontShop. There are so many wonderful animals in the shelters waiting for someone to rescue them. Also, please consider adopting or fostering a Senior. It is so rewarding. Plus they are easier than a puppy because they have less energy and are usually already housebroken! All they want is to cuddle with you on the couch. You will receive so much more than you will ever give them…and a lap full of unconditional love and gratitude.

Happy National Dog Day from me and my fur kids to you and yours!
Love,
Barbara, Lucy, Pepper and Meggy xo
