As a parent, I have to talk about this because my heart is breaking. This wonderful, strong, grief-filled mother just came out of her grief cocoon and spoke out for Love again today. She says in this video that she “heard Trump’s heart” on Tuesday, and now she does not want to talk with him any more.
My first reaction is shock. Can anyone else believe he still hadn’t spoken to her yet about this tragedy? That it wasn’t a #1 priority in the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville? No matter who you voted for (and I keep saying this because I am not writing a politically charged essay here – my goal is to help us get past political parties and heal as a nation) you must as parents and human beings yourself, be stunned at this revelation. The President is not only a father himself, he is supposed to be a father figure to our country and speak for all of us at times like this. This should be about heart and humanity. This is not normal.
(EDITED UPDATE: She has since said Trump had not tried to contact her until during the actual funeral itself and she had her cell off that day – again, this was several days after her daughter’s death. She said she got several voicemails that day from WH aides who tried to reach her while she was speaking at the funeral, and then again right afterwards while she was busy setting up her daughter’s foundation. So to be fair, he DID try to reach her… but several days later after it happened. She also says she fully intended to call him back the next day, but before she had a chance to call him, she watched his press conference. In the video clip, she says she watched him dishonor her daughter and the other anti-hate protesters, likening them to the KKKs and white nationalists. Her heart broke. That’s why she now says she will no longer speak to him. Still, she reacted with class and elegance. Her only advice to him: “Think before you speak.”)
Consider this mother’s horrific week. She has spent every day since Heather’s death with the busy-ness and horror of organizing her daughter’s funeral and starting a foundation in Heather’s name. With class and elegance, she spoke in extremely uncomfortable situations, doing her best to give words of healing to this nation. Then when she finally comes up for air, she sees a clip of his Tuesday press conference. I am so very sorry that this woman had to hear the President of this country liken her daughter to the KKK and white supremacists. My heart breaks for her. Yet she is still using her platform with eloquence, to stand up for her beliefs in the most positive way, just as her daughter Heather had lived her life.
I think this woman is one of the strongest people I have ever known, and she is doing so much to lead the moral movement in this country, to hold a mirror up for each one of us to look into, very much like Malala has done elsewhere in the world. She is a true hero.
Let us do everything we can to support her daughter’s foundation, and to spread her words and lessons to us. Every day we must hold ourselves accountable to find a way to take actions that make a difference in the world. We must teach that love is stronger than hate, speak up for those who are being bullied, and do what in our hearts we know is right and good and rooted in Love. We must make this family’s sacrifice count! ![]()
