Happy 150th Birthday Canada, and Happy Fourth of July America! Since I’m still filming Chesapeake Shores in Vancouver, I am spending this holiday weekend celebrating my dual heritage with Canadian and American friends. There’s nothing like a small town parade and people coming together to remind us of what’s important, no matter where you call home.
So much in our lives, families and politics are in turmoil right now. That makes it even more important to find ways to connect on a heart to heart level with those around us.
Neighbors, communities, religions, races, countries. We are all so much more alike than we are different. We all have hopes and dreams for our children, we all bleed the same color, we all find joy in our baby’s smile. And every parent would give up his or her own life to keep their family safe.
In the “busyness” of this holiday weekend, let’s take time to be grateful for our blessings… and for our differences. Because our differences are what make the tapestry of “us” gorgeous and great!
The 4th of July stands for something important. Our American forefathers fought so we could live in a country that stands for truth, liberty, equality, love and justice for all. What a legacy they gave us. Who knew that it could so quickly become shaky?
We are watching as our families, neighbors and countries are being ripped apart and pitted against each other by words, greed, tweets. My heart breaks a little more each day.
No matter what political party we identify with, we know in our hearts this is not right. We cannot remain silent and let meanness and disrespect become normal. What are we teaching our children? Where is the courage of enough good people to say this is wrong, that enough is enough?
A society is judged by how it treats its weakest and most vulnerable members. Never has it been more important than it is now to stand up, speak up, and bring others up with you.
When we watch fireworks this weekend, remember how and why it all started. People risked everything for freedom and justice and equality. How can we do less? What will our legacy be?
My hope is that we will come together and do the right thing. I pray that history will show that we too were heroes. That in the end we put aside politics and found a new way to live – and lead – with principles, ethics, goodness, and Love.
